The Big Handshake (Update).

The BIG Handshake World Record Attempt.

As you will know we have, for the past four months, been promoting our very exciting event to break the record for the longest handshake whilst also raising funds and awareness for Surrey Scouts.

Over the past few weeks the organising team have been monitoring the situation regarding the outbreak of Coronavirus and the implications that this will have on the event.

The team have been in constant dialogue with our stakeholders on the event, namely Surrey Scouts and Guildford Rugby Club and I have been keeping the Provincial Executive up to date with our position.

I am keen to ensure that whatever decision is taken it is done so after careful consideration and with a plan to move forward so that we can still hold the event on a future date.

Following the statement given yesterday by The Prime Minister, the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Scientific Officer, stating that the UK is moving out of the ‘Containment’ phase and into the ‘Delay’ phase with the aim being to push the peak of the outbreak into the summer, and in addition to guidance given by UGLE, it is with regret that we have taken the decision to postpone the Handshake Event.

The world record attempt will now be planned for June 2021 when we hope that Surrey Freemasons will join together with Surrey Scouts and members from across our community to do something amazing, and break the world record.

In addition, I am keen to fulfil our commitment to Surrey Scouts and provide the funding to build the high ropes activity trail at Bentley Copse.  This equipment will be a useful addition to the facilities at Bentley Copse and will provide an activity that children and young people from across Surrey can use.

Therefore, I have created a special Relief Chest to enable Lodges, Chapters and members to make donations so that we can provide this facility as soon as possible.

If you or your Lodge or Chapter would like to contribute to the fundraising efforts then please make donations in the following ways.

Via Relief Chest

If your Lodge or Chapter has a Relief Chest and wishes to make a donation then you can use a GREEN Voucher.  The Name of the Charity is ‘The Big Handshake’ and the charity number is E1065.

Via cheque

If making a donation via cheque then simply make the cheque payable to The Relief Chest Scheme and send it with an accompanying note confirming that the donation is for ‘The Big Handshake E1065’.  Cheques can be sent directly to the Relief Chest at The Masonic Charitable Foundation, 60 Great Queen Street, London WC2B 5AZ, or to the PCC Treasurer, W Bro Mike Kemsley via the Provincial Office at 71 Oakfield Road, Croydon CR0 2UX

Full details of how to make donations will shortly appear on the Provincial website along with details of the new date for 2021.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the BIG Handshake team for all their hard work and also to all those who have committed to attending and supporting the initiative.  I look forward to seeing you all at the event in 2021.

Sincerely and fraternally yours.

Paul Crockett
